Born in Algiers in 1942, Prof Sahel studied at the University of Marseille where he became Resident in 1967. In 1973 he became Chef de Clinique and by 1980 he had progressed to the post of Associate Professor of Gastroenterology.
Since 1989 he has been Head of the Department of Hepatogastrenterlogy in Hopital Sainte Marguerite, Marseille, France, where he is a full Professor.
He is a past President of the French Society of Digestive Endoscopy and an active member of several other societies including the French Society of Gastroenterology and AGA.
- What made you decide to become a gastroenterologist and hepatologist?
- Because of the technical aspects of this speciality.
- Who was the teacher you admired the most?
- My boss - Prof Henri Sarles. I also had the chance to practice digestive endoscopy at its beginning. My master for endoscopic cholangio-pancreatography was Itaru Oi.
- What is your unfulfilled ambition?
- I don’t have any unfulfilled ambitions just yet. However, the organization of work in a public hospital is becoming more and more difficult.
- How do you relax?
- In my house in the countryside.
- What car do you drive?
- A Saab.
- What is your best electronic 'toy'?
- I don't have any electronic "toys".
- Why did you get in involved in GastroHep.com?
- I got involved because I was asked to, and thought it interesting to join a dynamic staff.
